French theorist, Rene Girard, argues that we desire according to another. In the first part of the seminar, Girard’s concept of desire will be explained using examples from literature and the Bible.

In the second part of the seminar, Girard’s theory will be employed to examine contemporary issue—the increase in the number of young people presenting with gender dysphoria. “(Childhood) gender dysphoria describes a psychological condition in which a child experiences marked incongruence between the experienced gender and the gender associated with their biological sex”. (Cretella) Girard’s understanding of desire provides a productive and innovative way of understanding the condition.
