The Catholic Institute

About us

The establishment of The Catholic Institute by the Catholic Bishops of New Zealand is an exciting development in the history of the Private Training Establishment (PTE) that started 14 years ago as the Wellington Catholic Education Centre. TCI will continue the tradition of quality theological and education provision which have been the hallmarks of the PTE.

TCI has amalgamated some key agencies of the Church to help bring their combined energies to the success of this project which is critical to the next phase of our Church in Aotearoa. The agencies include the National Centre for Religious Studies and the Nathaniel Centre. Their inclusion does not change their focus or the importance of the roles they play but it allows us to use the resources of all involved to develop programmes of study and research that meet the needs of the Church.

TCI offers a range of qualifications from Certificate level to a Master of Educational Leadership. It also offers Faith Updates, which are short courses, as opportunities to begin your journey of formation and professional development or for personal interest.

TCI prides itself on the high standards and quality learning that our students have come to expect. We are a vibrant and vigorous tertiary institution, dedicated to excellence and, more importantly, we are committed to be true witnesses to the Catholic Church in New Zealand.

NZQA is Highly Confident in the educational performance and is Confident in the capability in self-assessment of TCI (External Evaluation and Review, 2010) placing TCI in NZQA’s top category, Category 1.
